People with mental illness feel left out in many settings, the church being one such place.  Yes, stigma is everywhere.  It's not that the faith community dislike people with mental illness.  Simply, they don't know what to say or how to help.  Avoidance results.  Acceptance of mental illness as being disorder in the brain takes education.  NAMI has educational programs and brochures to take to faith leaders and congregations that are very helpful in thwarting stigma and promoting recovery.  www.nami.org/faithnet is such a great resource and we urge NAMI members, mental health providers, and community stakeholders to contact NAMI Rome to deliver a presentation to area churches and synagogues.
