Someone you know has a mental illness; everyone has NAMI.

NAMI Basics is a 6-week class addressing childhood mental illness.  NAMI Rome offered the class twice in 2019.  Family Resource Center staff and two scout leaders (above) learned about childhood mental health conditions and ways to help families as they navigate the mental health, school, and justice systems in trying to find support and treatment for their child.

NAMI Rome educates and supports people with mental illness and family members/friends throughout NW Georgia. It offers, at no charge to the attendee:
  • Family-to-Family
  • Peer-to-Peer
  • Basics
  • In Our Own Voice
  • Family Support Group
  • Connections Recovery Support Group

What is NAMI?

NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation's leading voice on mental health. Today, we are an association of hundreds of local affiliates, state organizations and volunteers who work in your community to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need.

No different than other NAMI affiliates, NAMI Rome was established in the 1980's by a tireless and very small group who sought to improve the lives of their loved ones.  They would meet and comfort each other.  Many times only three attended the meetings.  Never giving up on their loved ones, this small group became advocates and expressed their concern when situations arose.  Others heard their voices and joined the effort.  In the late 1990's two became trained to facilitate the Family-To-Family education course.  From this and subsequent classes came additional interested family members and individuals with a mental illness who wanted to join the movement.

Meetings have been held in various locations, primarily churches.
