The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a national organization dedicated to the eradication of mental illnesses and to the improvement of the quality of life for all whose lives are affected by these diseases.
NAMI-Rome was established in the 1980's by a tireless and very small group who sought to improve the lives of their loved ones. They would meet and comfort each other. Many times only three attended the meetings. Never giving up on their loved ones, this small group became advocates and expressed their concern when situations arose. Others heard their voices and joined the effort. In the late 1990's two became trained to facilitate the Family-To-Family education course. From this and subsequent classes came additional interested family members who wanted to join the movement.
Meetings have been held in various locations, primarily churches.
